History
They resemble the much larger sled-pulling Spitz type dogs in
miniature, the Pomeranian is the smallest of the Northern breeds
from the Arctic Circle which they are said to have descended from.
Pomeranians are known to have existed around the eighteenth century
in Germany. The
Pomeranian was first introduced to Britain in the 19th century
weighting around 30 lbs. After several appeals from different
Pomeranian clubs, the breed Standard was reduced to 7lbs. It is said
that Queen Victoria was much taken with the breed and had a number
of the larger variety in her kennels. The breed was imported
from Pomerania (once a part of Germany) to England as a larger breed
in it's original form, weighing as much as 30 pounds. Smaller, but
otherwise developing into a healthy, not malformed dog, puppies were
born to the original Pomeranians, and the smaller versions became
extremely popular with the British. The Pomeranian was first recognized as an official breed in
1914, in it's present form, and has been a popular companion breed
